There are key differences between traditional 9-1-1 and VoIP 9-1-1 service.  With traditional phone service your 9-1-1 call is forwarded directly to the nearest emergency response centre.  With VoIP phone service your 9-1-1 call is forwarded to a third-party service provider, then routed to the emergency response centre.  Important things to remember:

  • You must be able to verify your location

Because VoIP adapters are portable, emergency operators may not have your current name, location or contact info.

  • Be prepared during any service interruption

It is highly recommended to have alternate phone service such as a cell phone in the event of a power, network or Internet outage.

  • Keep your service address up-to-date

If you move or change the physical address of your VoIP adapter you will need to contact Bruce Telecom.

  • Limitations of liability

Please refer to the full terms of service related to VoIP at www.brucetelecom.com/termsofservice

Setting up a new telephone number takes 5 business days.  Transferring or porting an existing telephone number can take up to 12 business days.  During this time it is very important that you do not cancel your current phone service until the porting is completed or you may lose your phone number.

VoIP is easy to set up and easy to use.  You need high speed internet service from Bruce Telecom, a standard phone handset and a working phone jack.  We will mail you a welcome kit containing everything else you need to get started including the VoIP adapter and simple, step by step instructions.

If you currently have a telephone area code plus exchange from one of the above communities it can most likely be ported to Bruce Telecom.  Please contact us to find out.
