New 10-Digit Dialing Pattern!

To meet the growing demand for new telephone numbers, dialing 10 digits for local calls will become mandatory in the 519 region by October 14, 2006.

Increasing demand for new numbers

Local 10-digit dialing is necessary due to the high demand for new telephone numbers and to provide a uniform local dialing method between adjacent regions. This will free up thousands of telephone numbers and lead to new area codes being added when necessary. Starting on October 14, 2006, the new area code 226 will be added in the 519 area. The new area code will only be assigned to new numbers once the 519 numbers are exhausted. This measure is the result of a decision by the Canadian Radio-television and Telecommunications Commission (CRTC). Ten-digit dialing has already been introduced in other Canadian regions and will soon become the norm across North America.

Consumer Responsibility

10-digit dialing is now operational everywhere in the Bruce Telecom telephone territory. Add-the-code and dial 10-digits for all local calls to, from and within area code 519 and new area code 226. There will be a four-month transition period between June and October during which communications using only 7-digits will be connected. All Bruce Telecom dial-up Internet customers were required to reconfigure their auto-dialer to dial 10-digits by June 17, 2006. Any network announcement that will remind you to include the area code may disrupt data transmission on your Internet connection, faxes etc. Instruction to reconfigure your auto-dialer is available at www.brucetelecom.com/tendigit.shtml. Emergency calls (911), directory assistance (411), repair (611) and relay service (711) will continue to be dialed using 3-digits. For answers to frequently asked questions and information specific to your region, go to www.dial10.ca or www.brucetelecom.com.
