Bruce Telecom - A Long Line Of History 1910-2008

The Bruce Telecom story is one of changes and challenges along a long line of history.

From 1910 when first petitions circulated through 1993 with the opening of the new Administration Centre in Tiverton, 1994 and fibre optic technology, 1995 and the introduction of the Internet division (BMI), Bruce Municipal Telephone System (BMTS), continued to thrive.

Changing Times is a phrase coined by the President and CEO, Hans O Nilsson. In September of 2005, the company name changed to simplify the brand identity as the Company expands its geographic reach and product offerings - changing from BMTS/BMI to Bruce Telecom. In August of 2006, it was announced the board of directors would be replaced by a board appointed by Council. The new Municipal Service Board allows Bruce Telecom to offer more new services to customers, such as Video-on-Demand or Voice-over-Internet Protocol. As telecommunication technology changes, so does Bruce Telecom.

In October 2006, Bruce Telecom was named the Business of the Year by the Owen Sound Chamber of Commerce and the #1 Internet provider by the Sun Times readers for the past 2 years.

Bruce Telecom continues to be very active in the communities it serves. As active participants, we are major sponsors of many community events, offer scholarships in our local high schools and community college and are members of Chambers of Commerce in the towns we serve.

Bruce Telecom made a commitment to have an annual fund raising Golf Tournament in 2000. During the next 4 years, we raised in excess of $40,000.00 for Diabetes Research divided equally between the John Robarts Research Institute in London and the Hospital for Sick Children in Toronto.

During the fall of 2003, Bruce Telecom chose to shift their support to the Grey Bruce Regional Health Centre in Owen Sound and their MRI (Magnetic Resonance Imaging) unit. Our commitment over a 5-year period was $100,000 and was realized in just 4 years. In future, funds raised from our Annual Golf Tournament will benefit the Kincardine, Southampton and Owen Sound hospitals.

Thanks to the continuing support of the residents and businesses of Grey and Bruce counties this fundraising endeavor is possible. In 2007, a decision was made to overlay Southampton with fibre optic cable giving Bruce Telecom the ability to provide Phone service, Cheetah DSL, Long Distance and or Digital TV to the residents of Southampton on our own facilities. At the same time, Digital TV is being made available to our customers in Port Elgin, Tiverton, Paisley and Kincardine.
